Valentine’s Day – Picking Your Pocket Since 496 AD

OK, so clearly from the title I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day. Sure it’s partly because I’m always alone and never get anything but hey, that’s not the point. The point is consumerism gone mad. We as a country celebrate St Valentine’s Day, nothing wrong with that is there? Not until everything in the shops is red and pink and heart-shaped and you suddenly get charged more because it’s a heart. I know, not everyone goes mad around Valentine’s Day, but enough people do for the shops to turn over a tidy profit estimated this year at $17.02 billion. Still think its not about profits?

A couple of weeks ago I heard a man say something very wise;

If you truly love someone then you should show them everyday, not just one day of the year.

Remember that as you celebrate. You don’t have to buy gifts to show someone you love them, sometimes the simplest of gestures will show it. Forget buying roses, grow your own. Don’t go out for a meal cook something special yourself (unless you can’t cook in which case step away from the oven and get your coat and wallet). Celebrate romance not consumerism!

Now please excuse me, I have to burn some roses! (Just kidding!)
